Z Burger

Plaudits: None
Neighborhood:
Two locations, one in Tenleytown, one in Glover Park

The Setup

A long belated fifth entry into our burger battle (see: Good Stuff, Rogue States, Ray's, and BGR), a whole group of us including myself, Official Co-Writer of DCWD CC, and Official Friends of DCWD Yupster, Biz, and HR Intern headed up to Tenleytown to get a free burger from Z Burger as part of a promotional giveaway.

The Vibe

Z Burger's vibe is like a slightly better version of a diner, with an exposed ceiling and large glassed-in patio added to the normal counter seating and four-tops. The furniture is simple metal and silver, which added to the red, yellow, and white color scheme makes for an interestingly bright place to eat. That being said, it has its quirks: the tables are bolted down to the floor, meaning the group of six had to split up between two four-tops. And the noise gets sort of echo-ey in the outdoor patio (side note: which in itself is sort of weird, I mean, what's the point? Just put tables outside so people can enjoy the sunshine). All this meant, HR Intern and I were sort of isolated from the group and the conversation.

The Food

But how about the burger? Well, for all the options for burgers (and especially milkshakes), it was actually fairly standard, like a slightly different version of Five Guys. Something solid and obviously way better than McDonald's. A good well-made burger, but nothing better than the other number of more creative options in the city.

Did the multitude of milkshake and malt options or the seasoned fries make up for it? Well my Chocolate Cherry milkshake seemed sort of uninspired. And the fries, on some level, might be trying to make up for their quality in sheer quantity, the large fries coming in a sack larger than my head. Sort of a letdown. But hey it was a free burger, and I know they do those kinds of promotions all the time.

The Verdict

Sorry, Z Burger. Rounding out the back end of the DC burger fight.
